Volunteering With the Friends Can Help You Live Longer

Volunteering With the Friends Can Help You Live Longer!

No, that is not a threat from our F.O.L. volunteer coordinator!

It is simply another great reason to call or email us about volunteering!

Information from a review of over forty studies published in BMC Public Health shows that those who help others are also helping themselves.

“Our systematic review shows that volunteering is associated with improvements in health,” ~ Dr. Suzanne Richards, University of Exeter Medical School

The authors found that those who spend their time helping others on a regular basis can reduce early mortality rates by 22%, compared to people who don’t participate in volunteer activities. They also found volunteering reduced rates of dementia, high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes!

Thanks for your support!

Reasons to Help with a Friends of the Library Activity or Book Sale:

  • Helps our library and our community
  • Helps pay for library improvements & programs
  • We usually have food
  • You are welcome to read on the job
  • It helps the kids
  • You will be healthier
  • You will live longer

As you can see, volunteering with the Friends of the Library is a great idea. You can email or call us, or sign up to help at our Spring Book Sale right away using VolunteerSpot which can be found on the side bar of this page.

Volunteers Circle!

We need volunteers April 22-24 for help with setting up books, organizing them, supervising the book sales, and clean up.

There are jobs for those who like to do heavy lifting or those who need to take it a little easy – teens, seniors and families are all welcome to help!

We would love to see you there, but if you are not able to help at the book sale, you may want to contact us about serving at the Summer Reading Program’s party this summer, or serving on our executive board!

Volunteering: it helps the kids, it helps the Friends of the Library and it helps you!

Thank You Library Staff & Volunteers!

The Friends of the Davie County Public Library hosted a special Spring Appreciation Luncheon for our library’s staff and volunteers in honor of National Library Appreciation Week.

A good time was had by all!

Library Appreciation

Davie County Celebrates National Library Week

It is National Library Week – April 10-16, 2016 – Libraries Transform!

Libraries are one of our most important community resources- they support families and schools, children and adults. They improve literacy and provide access to technology for student and senior alike!

Friends of the Davie County Public Library thanks our local libraries’ (Mocksville and Cooleemee)  staff and volunteers for being an important part of our community. Our small library is a place to meet, learn, and grow.

Our library staff and volunteers work hard all year-long and during National Library Week, the F.O.L. will thank them for their dedication with a special spring luncheon on Thursday.

If you want to be a part of encouraging and supporting our library staff, you can contact us here at the website, join the Friends of the Library or send us a tax-deductible donation anytime.

We are thankful for our library and want to help our community show it!

Fall Book Sale Fundraiser for Davie Libraries

Support Davie County Public Library by Joining the Friends of the Library!

All teachers get a $1 off any membership fee or renewal.

A $3 “fill-a-bag” sale will be held from 2-4 p.m. on our last day. We provide the bags.

You can still donate books anytime by dropping them off at the library. We especially need to replenish our stock of children’s books. Many teachers shop our sales in order to supply their classrooms with supplemental reading materials and we always are sure to give them a great deal. We also donate many of the books we receive to classrooms and community groups after our sales, so you can always be sure that the books you are done reading will go on to be well used and well-loved by others!

We are a 501c3 organization, so let us know if your donation requires a receipt.

The funds from F.O.L.’s booksales are always used to support our library’s services and programs for youth and adults. This year, we helped our library to purchase updated computers for the Cooleemee branch, sponsored the Summer Reading Program’s party, and helped our library celebrate National Library Week!

Future projects include sponsoring an “Author’s Talk” and organizing a writer’s “Hangout” group for local authors, as well as providing a Fall Appreciation Day for the library’s staff and volunteers.

Volunteers Needed!

We still need help with setting up for the book sale on Thursday, October 15, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and need help during the sale, as well as with clean-up Sunday, October 18 from 4-5:30 p.m. We will serve pizza to our clean-up crew!

Free Summer Movies at the Library

movie-popcornWednesdays at the Movies

11 am:  Lunchin’ at the Movies- These films are rated PG and are usually less than 2 hours.

1 pm:  Snackin’ at the Cinema-These movies are rated PG 13 and usually last 2 hours.

You are welcome to bring your lunch or snacks and get comfy with your blankets & pillows.

The library’s big screen showing of recently released or theme related films, has become an annual fun summer event for Davie County Library patrons. The Youth Services Department tries to schedule films that were based on a book, or that relate to their summer theme!

There is plenty of floor space, or you can relax in chairs. Parents are responsible for deciding if movie content and ratings are appropriate for their family.

Check on www.commonsensemedia.org, or review the Calendar of Events with the movie schedule – available for download here and at the Library’s Website.

After the movie, stick around and check out a copy of the YA, Elementary or Juvenile Fiction book the movies are based on- because we all know, the book is always even better than the movie!

Celebrate National Library Week!

It is National Library Week, and the Friends of the Library are celebrating our Davie County libraries and the unlimited possibilities we find at our libraries!

Every day this week we will be doing something special to let our library staff and volunteers know what their efforts and creativity mean to us!

This week we honor our library staff and our library volunteers for all they do to make our library not only a terrific place to find books, but to make our library a center of the community!

On Thursday, our volunteers will be providing and serving a luncheon for them as a small way to say “thank you”. Throughout the week we will try to let them all know how much we appreciate the extra mile they take to be sure that our library is the best it can be, and provide those endless possibilities to youth and adults in Davie County.

Our libraries (Cooleemee and Mocksville) support youth and literacy with regular outreach programs that inform the public about the services provided at our library.

They provide early and hesitant readers with the encouragement and motivation they need through programs like “Reading with Ranger” , Storytime, the Summer Reading program, and “Launches Learning” which assists students in learning how to do research and even homework assignments that they are having difficulty with.

They bring us e-books, great speakers and authors, help us record and preserve our local history, provide a meeting place for community groups and activities, job services, homework help, and technology education to youth, students and adults who otherwise might not have the opportunity.

And the Friends of the Library supports the library throughout the year with regular contributions of financial help and by providing volunteers.

How do we do that?

  • Financially: through our 501 c3 designation, businesses and individuals are able to donate to our libraries and receive the full value of their donation in services or gifts, as a tax write off.
  • Fundraising: our group is the main fundraising arm of our library. Through our bi-annual book sales and other fundraising activities, we are able to help provide the extras that our library staff need in order to encourage library patrons and better promote educational activities.
  • Volunteering: our members regularly volunteer in the library’s history room, with the summer reading program, for the book sales in setting up, cleaning up and selling the books.
  • Board: our volunteer board meets once a month to co-ordinate activities that will support our library programs and staff. This includes our fundraisers and ideas to promote literacy, as well as providing items that our librarians request such as youth services needs (games, puzzles, CD’s), refreshments for special events, monies towards special speakers such as Dr. Elliot Engel, and treats for holiday events such as the Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

So celebrate your library this week- take out a good book to read, and say “Thank You” to a librarian while you are there!
